 Dr. Tinsley is a graduate of John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington where he was Valedictorian. He completed his undergraduate studies at Davidson College and medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. His general surgery training was completed at the University of North Carolina Hospitals where he served as the Administrative Chief Resident. He completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at UNC Hospitals and joined Wilmington Surgical Associates in 1993. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery for the UNC School of Medicine and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Tinsley holds board certification in both general and vascular surgery.
Dr. Tinsley's broad interest in surgery encompasses disorders of the skin, neck, lung, breast, gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels and extremities. His practice includes general, breast, cancer, hernia, laparoscopic, pediatric, thoracic and vascular surgery. His special interests lie in complex vascular surgery in which he employs a host of noninvasive, endovascular, and open surgical techniques.
Dr. Tinsley founded the Coastal Vascular Club and serves as Medical Director for the Wilmington Vascular Center. He has served as Section Chief for general surgery in the Department of Surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and on the Advisory Committee for the Coastal Diabetes Center. He was a member of the Coastal Cancer Center Campaign Cabinet and is on the Board of Directors of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation. Dr. Tinsley, Jr. represented North Carolina as the Young Surgeon delegate to the American College of Surgeons.
An Eagle Scout, Dr. Tinsley serves on the Executive Board of the Cape Fear Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He is a Deacon at the Saint Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church. He is most proud of his wife Leslie and four children: Ellis III, Carryl, Graham, and Morelle.
