 Dr. Cortina is a general and Thoracic surgeon whose particular area of interest includes all aspects of thoracic oncology (lung cancer, mediastinal malignancies, and esophageal cancer). He has particular expertise in the multidisciplinary management (combined chemotherapy/radiation/surgery) of lung and esophageal cancer. Since establishing his practice, he has been instrumental in developing Wilmington’s first multidisciplinary thoracic oncology clinic. He also performs numerous complex operations using minimally invasive surgical techniques for both benign and malignant disease. These include minimally invasive surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, hyperhidrosis (profuse sweating disorder), lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and many more.
Dr. Cortina is board certified in both General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. He received his M.D. from New York Medical College. He completed his general surgery training at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. This is where he developed his broad interest in general, breast, cancer, pediatric, laparoscopic and thoracic surgery. During his residency, he was a Research Fellow in the Division of Surgical Oncology. He has been the principal investigator and co-investigator on several research grants, and has published several abstracts and papers as well being a co-author of a book chapter related to thoracic surgery. He then spent a year abroad as a Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. Dr. Cortina completed a Cardiothoracic Fellowship at the University of Rochester and joined Wilmington Surgical Associates in 2001.
The professional and scientific societies of which Dr. Cortina is a member include, among others, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Cortina is most proud of his wife Christine P. Cortina, Ph.D. She is a practicing Counseling Psychologist in the Wilmington area and they have been together nearly 20 years.
